The United States entered WWI in 1917 after being neutral for 3 years.Germany had pushed the U.S. closer and closer to war by doing several things.Finally the U.S. was pushed to far and declared war on Germany and it's allies.
Germany used unrestricted submarine warfare (USW) in the oceans against non-army ships.This violated the United States rights for neutrality and angered Americans, while pushing to battle."The present German submarine warfare against commerce is warfare against mankind," said Woodrow Wilson.Many Americans believed this and wanted to punish Germany in the war.
The economic ties between the U.S. and the allies we had investments we wanted to keep so we would not lose any money.Congress says, "The world must be made safe for democracy," said Woodrow Wilson. The U.S was making billions of dollars from France and Great Britain and was not making any money from Germany, and didn't want to loose all the money it was gaining from the allies.
The Zimmerman Telegram was the thing that finally brought the Americans to war against Germany and its allies.It angered many Americans to find out Germany tried to persuade Mexico into entering the war on the side of the Central Powers.Germany had promised to give Mexico Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona if they had won.Although Germany was preparing for war with the U.S. they wanted the U.S. to remain neutral."In spite of this, it is our intention to keep the United States of America neutral," says the Zimmerman Telegram.
