I am an 18 year old black male in America. Over my lifetime I have been apart and been affected by the social infrastructure. To me it seems that is much harder for Blacks and Latinos to succeed. I have known over 20 people to serve time in jail. I have known less than 10 people that have gone and graduated from college. This disparity frightens me because as this trend continues the younger generations of Blacks and Latinos will have fewer and fewer positive role models. Most role models that we do have are either in the sports or music industries. Those role models tend to be rich and famous, goals that are out of reach for most of the teens. Even worst of they might not even have the best moral standards. The two major reasons disproportion are finances and education. You can fully understand the situation when you begin to look at them together.
African Americans and Hispanic Americans account for almost 25 percent of the total U.S. population. African Americans and Hispanic Americans owned fewer than 10 percent of all businesses in the U.S. At the same time of about the 2 million people incarcerated, 63 percent of them are Blacks and Latinos. If we are less than a third of the total population, why are we almost two thirds the entire prison population? Is it because of the economical differences?
Whites make on average $25,000-$44,000 a year. Blacks on average make about $2,500-$25,000 a year. Just looking at the facts you can see a huge difference, but when you start looking at the finer details as in how people use money you can start to see why it might be harder for minorities to succeed. Minorities have less disposable income. With less than 35 percent of black business succeed after 4 years. Even if minorities decided to risk their livelihood by opening up their own business, it's a good chance they would lose money in the process and end up worse of than they began.
