This paper aims to explore the
foundation of specific claims made by a product advertisement. In order to be a
fully informed consumer it is imperative to examine claims, research, and the
use of anecdotal correlations. The product and accompanying advertisements that
are being examined are for the RezzimaxÒ tuner. The product’s webpage
appears to make outlandish claims such as: curing anxiety, ADHD, and depression,
migraine eradication, loss of joint or muscle discomfort, relieves stress, and eliminating
TMJ. The majority of the infographics, videos, and articles on the page appeal
directly to the consumer’s pathos—completely disregarding the need for
research-based claims and the importance of establishing expertise in the subject.

However, due to newly-found and growing research on nerve stimulation the
product’s claim remain valid in most all categories. The stimulation of the vagal
nerve has many correlations with curing migraines, alleviating anxiety, stress,
and depression. There is biological evidence to suggest that in terms of pain reduction—the
product may work (Medscape Page). When examining the functions and locations of
the body parts that the manufacturers claim to target, there is a strong
implication that certain treatments for pain may be effective. This needs to be
examined more thoroughly and on a widespread basis. In most cases, scientific evidence supports the claims the
manufacturers make.

Though the actual webpage lacks the hundreds of research studies
that have found significant correlation between various chronic illnesses, both
mental and physical, and vagal nerve stimulation—that does not mean the product
won’t effectuate said results. Combatting mental illnesses such as anxiety,
depression, or schizophrenia, that are caused by life circumstances, could be
reduced due to the forced meditation/relaxation the patients undergo while
using the product. Alternative methods of alleviating symptoms are becoming
more widely known and liked by people who deal with chronic pain or discomfort mostly
due to the influx in those seeking out less medicinal solutions to their ailments
(Goyal, M., Haythornthwaite, J., Levine, D., Becker, D., Vaidya, D.,
Hill-Briggs, F., & Ford, D. (2010)).

“We must be clear that the Rezzimax® tuner is not intended
to cure, treat, or prevent any illness. Please consult a medical professional
if you have chronic pain. The Rezzimax® tuner is simply a great tool to help
you get into a state of deep relaxation and learn to let go pain” (Peck, S.

(n.d)). Even if there are no scientific correlations between the product and
treating certain mental illnesses—the placebo effect has an impact nonetheless.

What the product page fails to consider is who the audience is—it must be
assumed that the audience has no knowledge of the research done on similar
stimulations, and no previous knowledge of cognitive neuropsychology, the
nervous system in general, in particular—the vagal and trigeminal nerves. In order to conclude that this
product can reduce symptoms of those with anxiety, depression, and
schizophrenia the components of these must be explained. The vagal and
trigeminal nerves are both vital to the communication of senses throughout the
body to the brain and vice versa. The vagal nerve is the longest cranial
nerves, made up of both sensory and motor fibers, beginning in the medulla oblongata
and traveling down the neck, branching off into the heart, lungs, stomach,
esophagus, and small intestine. The trigeminal may not be the longest, but it
is the most complex and largest cranial nerve (Tewfik, T. L. (2017, December)).

Though anxiety disorders and depression are not completely understood in the
scientific community, there is still an abundance of information that has been
discovered. Almost all of the brain’s emotional processing happens in the frontal
cortical regions of the brain and the limbic system. The cortical regions
handle mood regulation, planning, consequences and rewards, and impulse control.

The limbic system contains the hippocampus, amygdala, thalamus, and hypothalamus
which are responsible for fear and stress inhibitors, processing emotions and
pain, and executing appropriate behaviors to situations. Anxiety disorders are
caused by an increase in the emotion-processing parts of the brain which can
cause certain neurotransmitters to either become excitatory or inhibitory when
they should not be. There has been a lot of research done in the past twenty
years on the neurobiological cause of posttraumatic stress disorder. The
findings have shown significant differences in brain regions that are active
during simulations in which the participants are given tasks that require the
use of executive and emotional processing systems. Similar to anxiety
disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder is caused by the inhibition of certain
parts of the brain that should be active, and the activation of brain regions
that are responsible for unconscious actions or reactions. Many of the mental
illnesses that stem from some type of anxiety are due to a hyperactivity in
certain parts of the brain, for example; the amygdala is being activated more
than normal in people with generalized or social anxiety disorder (Martin, E. I., Ressler, K. J., Binder, E., & Nemeroff, C. B.

(2010)). Knowing this information about the origin of mental illnesses in the
brain it is now easy to assume a correlation between the stimulation of the vagal
and trigeminal nerves and the alleviation of brain disorders. The most frequent
testimonials about the RezzimaxÒ Tuner are regarding a complete or partial alleviation of chronic
migraines. Migraines, like mental illnesses, are not fully understood as to
where the cause stems from, but most all research thus far points to them being
caused by a change in the brainstem and its relationship with the trigeminal
nerve which is one of the body’s main passages for pain. With this information
in mind, a consumer can make an educated decision to use this alternative
method to relieve their chronic pain (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2018).

The information provided by the
manufacturer is basically all useless—the only time the manufacturers establish
their ethos is when they answer specific questions in the comments section of
their page—where they directly answer questions from the consumers. There is a
lack of scientific information. The product page seems only to rely on
anecdotal evidence, which is effective in producing a placebo effect but
ineffective when attempting to support claims with valid arguments. There is a
lack of logic in the argument of the manufacturer—heavily relying on inductive
reasoning which is a slippery slope in these circumstances due to the
implications of the benefits of the product. While the argument itself may not
be valid, it remains sound. The RezzimaxÒ Tuner mimics many of the actions
that are practiced in clinical trials that examine the relationship between the
vagal or trigeminal nerves and mental illnesses or chronic pain.
