There are so many germs in the world that will make one sick or infected. Germs spread from people to people all throughout the world causing many to get sick. But this can be avoided. Most people know to simply wash their hands or sanitize them after touching a lot of dirty things or before eating diner. Some may wonder though which cleaner is the best to clean your hands with. There are so many different hand cleaners that it’s hard to figure out which is best and which one people should use. Different examples of hand cleaners would be soap and water, sanitizer, and even bacterial wipes. Many studies show that one should use soap and water over hand sanitizer. One study even shows that one has a much greater risk of infection using hand sanitizer over using soap and water. According to Kathleen Doheny, “in the study, published in the American Journal of Infection Control, CDC researchers looked at the use of hand sanitizers by the staff in 91 long-term care facilities. In those where the staff were equally or more likely to use the hand sanitizers over soap and water for routine hand cleaning, the chance of an outbreak was nearly six times greater.” Hand sanitizers have an active ingredient of a form of alcohol, for example ethyl alcohol. Aaron E. Glatt, MD, executive vice president of Mercy Medical Center, Rockville Centre, Long Island, N.Y. states that, “hand sanitizers work as an antiseptic and will not work against the infection caused by difficile, a bacterium that can lead to life-threatening inflammation in the colon.” Many others also don’t realize that when one sneezes or coughs they are spreading germs to other people around. When one blows their nose or coughs into their hands they must wash or sanitize their hands in order to not spread germs. When kids are in school the go to is hand sanitizer because it is easy and does not take as much time as soap and water. It’s easier to just pump some hand sanitizer into one’s hands then to walk to the bathroom scrub soap in your hands and rinse with water following the need for a paper towel to dry your hands with. Even though the soap and water might be the more effective way, hand sanitizer is a much easier cleaner to use.People also make mistakes when they are washing their hands by not using enough soap or not scrubbing their whole hand enough. One needs to get every crack and crevice of their hands to get them as clean as they can be, one should even get under their fingernails because research shows that many germs are under the fingernails. People also underestimate how  much hand sanitizer they should use. If one does not use enough hand sanitizer it will not properly clean their hands. Some only put a tiny little drop into their hands which does nothing and does not make your hands completely clean. In conclusion, the world has many germs and we need to properly sanitize our hands in order not to get sick. Many may wonder what cleaner is the best to use but many studies show that the old fashion soap and water is the best route to go.Science Fair Bibliography”Infection Control”. “Infection Control.” Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
