Larger burners are controlled with a
combination of a Combustion Management System (CMS) and a Burner Management
System (BMS). The BMS determines gas supply and cut off for a burner and is
also responsible to shut down in unsafe conditions. The CMS determines the
ratio of fuel gas to air which is put for burning and prevents unsafe
conditions from happening in the first place.
The RTDs are used to sense temperature
at different points of BMS& CMS assembly. The gas analyser detests CO ppm
and excess air % – the % oxygen present in the flue gas after combustion in
chimney. Typically 3 to 4% oxygen is desirable in flue gas. It is hazardous to
reduce the excess air beyond certain limit as the by-product of incomplete
combustion (H2 and CO) or unburned fuel could fill a space in the
duct, may later mix with air and might result in uncontrolled combustion.
Insufficient air also results in environmentally undesirable emissions. Too
much excess air is a major cause of inefficiency. So, it is required to control
O2 at its ideal amount for the load. The burner manufacturer
provides an O2 trim SP curve – this is used to set the SP of the O2
trim PID loop. The manufacturer also provides the settings for slam shut off
valve, pressure safety valve and fuel gas to air ratio.

An electronic sequence controller provided in the control panel
start the burner firing system in the proper sequence ensuring full safety and
auto operation. An ultra-violate tube is provided on the burner as part of
flame failure safety control. These UV detectors are used for supervision of
the gas flame, yellow burning oil flames and for pilot flame proving. As the UV
cell reacts only to illumination from the 190…270mm range of spectrum,
infra-red (for e.g. glowing fire brick in the combustion chamber), day light
and artificial light cannot generate a flame signal.
Air pressure safety
For gas burner,
air pressure switch is a standard feature. If air pressure signal is not available,
the firing signal will not start and give an audio signal alarm.
Intermittent pilot burner
The main flame is
ignited by means of air of a pilot burner provided on the burner. The pilot
flame is established by means of a high voltage ignition spark at ignition
electrode ends provided on the pilot burner. The ignition voltage of 14500
volts is provided by an ignition transformer fitted on the burner.

Flame tube is a cylindrical cell with the two slotted flats welded on the both the
sides. These are required for forward and backward adjustment of flame tube
with respect to diffuser plate. Two fixing screws are provided on the burner
body for preventing flame tube from sagging during operation. The distance
between the diffuser plate and flame tube is 115mm.
Diffuser plate is provided for proper mixing of combustion air and fuel. It also
decides the shape and length of the flame. For proper flame shape diffuser
plate has to be concentric with respect to flame tube.
Pilot gas burner:
for igniting the main flame
A small pilot burner is provided to ignite the main flame. Pilot flame is
ignited with the help of two nos. Ignition electrodes fitted on the pilot
burner. High voltage spark is established with the help of an ignition
transformer provided on the burner. Gas supply to the pilot burner is through a
pilot solenoid valve provided on the gas train.
Gas butterfly valve
This is fitted on the gas chambers inlet pipe. Servomotor will
drive the butterfly as per BMS command.
