The BMS & CMS is a
safety solution that is useful for safe start up and shut down of a heater
treater. BMS & CMS monitors and manages the operation of burner. It uses
user friendly interface. In the long run, this management system makes
operation more safe and efficient.

Larger burners are controlled with a
combination of a Combustion Management System (CMS) and a Burner Management
System (BMS). The BMS determines gas supply and cut off for a burner and is
also responsible to shut down in unsafe conditions. The CMS determines the
ratio of fuel gas to air which is put for burning and prevents unsafe
conditions from happening in the first place.

The RTDs are used to sense temperature
at different points of BMS& CMS assembly. The gas analyser detests CO ppm
and excess air % – the % oxygen present in the flue gas after combustion in
chimney. Typically 3 to 4% oxygen is desirable in flue gas. It is hazardous to
reduce the excess air beyond certain limit as the by-product of incomplete
combustion (H2 and CO) or unburned fuel could fill a space in the
duct, may later mix with air and might result in uncontrolled combustion.
Insufficient air also results in environmentally undesirable emissions. Too
much excess air is a major cause of inefficiency. So, it is required to control
O2 at its ideal amount for the load. The burner manufacturer
provides an O2 trim SP curve – this is used to set the SP of the O2
trim PID loop. The manufacturer also provides the settings for slam shut off
valve, pressure safety valve and fuel gas to air ratio.

Key Features of BMS & CMS

Fully modulating

This means that they produce the exact amount of heat which is
required at any time. The adjustment is automatic, by means of a highly
sensitive control system. An electronic controller is used to monitor the
actual values compared with the required values, and to issue accurate
switching commands to the modulating drive unit. The motor not only controls
the continuous increase or decrease In the burner output, but also matches the
supply of the fuel and air by means of a coupled controlled device in such an
optimum way that complete combustion is guaranteed throughout the modulating

High combustion efficiency

Every burner is equipped with properly designed with flame tube
and diffuser plate for proper mixing of combustion air and fuel. This system guarantees
the high combustion efficiency to meet the demands of energy saving and
environmentally safe combustion process in exemplary manner. This mixing device
has another advantage. It allows the flame shape to be adjusted to the dimensions
of the combustion chambers

Fully automatic with flame failure safety

An electronic sequence controller provided in the control panel
start the burner firing system in the proper sequence ensuring full safety and
auto operation. An ultra-violate tube is provided on the burner as part of
flame failure safety control. These UV detectors are used for supervision of
the gas flame, yellow burning oil flames and for pilot flame proving. As the UV
cell reacts only to illumination from the 190…270mm range of spectrum,
infra-red (for e.g. glowing fire brick in the combustion chamber), day light
and artificial light cannot generate a flame signal.

Air pressure safety

For gas burner,
air pressure switch is a standard feature. If air pressure signal is not available,
the firing signal will not start and give an audio signal alarm.

Intermittent pilot burner

The main flame is
ignited by means of air of a pilot burner provided on the burner. The pilot
flame is established by means of a high voltage ignition spark at ignition
electrode ends provided on the pilot burner. The ignition voltage of 14500
volts is provided by an ignition transformer fitted on the burner.

The burner broadly consists of the following:

Gas nozzles

Servomotor mechanism type ARG(ARG unit)

Flame tube

Diffuser tube

Pilot gas burner

Gas butterfly valve

Combustion fan

required for combustion is provided by forced draught fan mounted separately.
This fan is designed to supply air at required pressure and quantity. Pressure
is decided on the basis of burner pressure drop and combustion chamber pressure
drop. The fan is driven by a directly coupled 3 phase induction motor. It is
recommended to provide a flexible leather bellow between burner and fan to
avoid transfer of vibrations if developed by the fan.

Gas nozzles

Function:to distribute the gas quantity to be
fired equally around the diffuser plat for proper mixing of the air and fuel

Description:number of gas pipes are welded the gas chamber. On
these pipes gas nozzles are provided to proper distribution of gas around the
diffuser plate

Servomotor mechanism type ARG (ARG

Flame Tube:

Function: This is provided to give
proper shape to the flame

Flame tube is a cylindrical cell with the two slotted flats welded on the both the
sides. These are required for forward and backward adjustment of flame tube
with respect to diffuser plate. Two fixing screws are provided on the burner
body for preventing flame tube from sagging during operation. The distance
between the diffuser plate and flame tube is 115mm.

Diffuser plate:

Diffuser plate is provided for proper mixing of combustion air and fuel. It also
decides the shape and length of the flame. For proper flame shape diffuser
plate has to be concentric with respect to flame tube.

Pilot gas burner:

for igniting the main flame

A small pilot burner is provided to ignite the main flame. Pilot flame is
ignited with the help of two nos. Ignition electrodes fitted on the pilot
burner. High voltage spark is established with the help of an ignition
transformer provided on the burner. Gas supply to the pilot burner is through a
pilot solenoid valve provided on the gas train.

Gas butterfly valve

This is fitted on the gas chambers inlet pipe. Servomotor will
drive the butterfly as per BMS command.

The Advantages of BMS & CMS

A burner combustion& management system can make a big difference for
oil & gas companies:

Increased Operations Efficiency

Ionization rod
for low calorific values.

combustion efficiency due to proper mixing of fuel gas and air.

The BMS can
monitor and reignite failed burner flame without any manual intervention, allowing
oilfield professionals to manage more wells.

Ø  Reliable burner
management means less production-loss and it gives assurance that the burner
flame is working properly, so the application can function as it should.

Increased Safety

Ø  The
BMS&CMS is designed to detect application inputs that indicate problems and
take appropriate action.

Ø  UV scanners
for gas flame.

Ø  The
system will detect high/low pressure with the help of slam shut off valve and
safety relief valve and determine whether a shutdown is required or not.

Ø  Without
the BMS &CMS, there will be no safety shutdown. This increases risks.

Temperature and Air to Fuel ratio control

helps to maintain temperature consistency unlike pneumatic controlled burners.

Ø  Uses electronic
digital controls for a precise and reproducible mixture of fuel and combustion air.

Ø  Modulates
the burner flame intensity based on temperature needed for the application

Remote control and monitoring

Ø This
system is compatible with both remote and local panel for monitoring.

Ø To
manage the burner from control room and keep track of the entire unit.

Ø Allows
user to monitor flame status, change temperature set points and even shut down
from remote panel.

User friendly

Precise control for optimal combustion values via
user interface

All necessary commands for operating the burner can
be accessed from a plant operator level person.

Without BMS&CMS

Auto Re-Light

The BMS quickly detects the flame absence
in the combustion application, and can quickly reignite the burner flame.

Temperature Control

The BMS will manage temperature set points
that are set by the user, ensuring that the burner flame is on only when

No electronic
temperature control.

Remote Monitoring & Control

BMS&CMS are compatible with remote
monitoring and control technologies. This allows the user to monitor and
manage the BMS from the comfort of an office.

No remote monitoring or control is possible.

Emergency Shutdown

The BMS can detect when certain application
inputs (e.g. high/low pressure, level, etc.) indicate a potential problem,
and can shut down the application safely.

No safety
shutdown capabilities exist.

Excess Air

Regulation of excess air and Oxygen trim

No excess air control
