The Stonewall Riots were a series of violent protests that took place in the early hours of the morning on June 28, 1969. They occured at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. The inn had a bar that was one of the only places gay, lesbian, and trans citizens could go to dance without being arrested or having their reputation ruined. The members of these bars were growing sick of having to sneak around to meet others and date. Protests were occuring, only to be met with deaf ears from the government. On the morning of June 28, the police arrived at the hotel after an anonymous tip from an unknown source. The owners of the bar made it clear when asked to explain the proceedings of their business that they were in full support of the community they gave a safe haven to, and that they would not let anybody on the property be arrested for being themselves. This led to a protest from those in the bar for their equal rights upon threat of their arrest and that of the bar’s owners, as well as the inn’s employees, which would effectively shut down the inn completely. When neither side showed any desire to back down from their fight, it became violent. Protests came from the LGBT community that they deserved basic human rights and they felt it was their right to love whoever they wanted to. The single riot led to many organized protests for the sake of civil rights. As the riots made headlines, they morphed into rallies. All eyes were on the fearless fighters of the Stonewall Inn, and subsequently, its leaders. The problem is, nobody knew exactly who led them. Due to its illegality and the controversy surrounding the protests, the vast majority of the leaders chose to remain nameless in fear of losing their jobs, friends, or even families. This makes it nearly impossible to identify individuals who led the movement, though we do know the groups that stepped up to the plate.
