Technology and Social
Change

            The culture
of society is constantly changing slowly but steadily. However, the current
advancements in technology have accelerated the speed at which the societal
culture is changing. According to Ferris and Stein (2014), technological
advancement is providing the major driving force in the process of social
change. Technological developments such as mobile phones, the Internet, social
media platforms, and computers have not only changed the lives of individuals
but also groups in our society today. The change is still in progress as more
innovations are made. The emergence of new social movements, for example, is
accelerated by the advancements in the methods of sharing information created
by the Internet. Changes in technology have attributed to the changing of norms
and practices today. Different news articles have addressed the topic of
technology in this trending social change.

Several news articles have been
written to discuss the topic of technology and social change. As fostered by
various authors, technological determinism is caused by the increased social
changes in the world today. Articles including “How technology-driven
teamwork can fuel social change” by Annika Small, “How the internet is changing
language” by Zoe Kleinman, and “When using social media becomes socially
destructive” by Lisa Mulcahy extensively talk about this.

            The article
“How technology-driven teamwork can fuel social change” by Annika Small
published in The Guardian on March 6, 2012 explains how technological
developments can be used to promote positive social change by using it to solve
most of the social challenges we face in the world today. The article utilizes
examples of social enterprises that use technology to address major social
issues in the society which include: FutureGov, Patchwork app, and Nominet
Trust. According to Small (2012), the use of technology in the collaboration of
the private, public, and other third sectors is the main idea behind a positive
social change.

            Zoe
Kleinman talks about this topic in the article that was published on BBC under
the title “How the internet is changing language” on August 16, 2010. The
article talks about how the Internet is contributing to the changes in
languages. According to Kleinman (2010), just like any other form of culture,
language is in a continuous state of change, however, the Internet is speeding
up the changes in different languages. The author uses the example where the
informal language used on the Internet conflicted with the traditional language
used in the courtrooms. While testifying in the courtroom in 2010, Christopher
Poole was requested to define different slang languages that are commonly used
on the Internet. The article covers the contribution of the Internet towards
the development of slang (Kleinman 2010).

            The article
“When using social media becomes socially destructive,” covers the impact of
social media on the individuals’ social and psychological behavior. In her
article published in the Los Angeles Times on June 5, 2015, Mulcahy addresses
the issue of social media on social behavior. She explains how following social
media posts and pictures can lead to depression and even suicides. The article
explains that the hypes on the Internet lead to false perceptions.

            These
articles target different groups of individuals. The article by Annika Small
targets policymakers who are focused on bringing a positive social change in
the society. The idea that the article concentrates on using technology to
solve various social problems brings out this fact. The message in the article
is focused on encouraging the policymakers in various sectors to adopt
technology to solve social problems and foster a positive culture in various
social groups. On the other hand, Zoe Kleinman’s article does not target a
specific audience. The article aims at educating the public in general, by
using the real-life examples, how technology has contributed to the changes in
global languages. The article brings to the limelight how internet-based
language influenced the emergence of slang. Lastly, Lisa Mulcahy’s article
targets the social media users, especially the young generation. This is
because the article concentrates on the influence of the social media on social
behavior. In all the articles, the discussion on the impact of technology on
social behavior is tailored to the targeted groups of audience.

The idea that all the articles
address the same issue brings out the first similarity. They all address the
impacts of the various advancements in technology on social change. In
addition, the articles are informative. They focus on informing the various
audiences about the effects of technology on various sociological components.

Lastly, all the articles use real-life examples to address and explain this
issue.

            Despite the
existence of the similarities, differences can also be evidently identified in
the articles. Annika Small’s article for instance explains how the
technological advancements are being utilized to promote a positive social
change in the society. On the other hand, Lisa Mulcahy covers the negative
social changes that pop up because of the utilization of technological
developments (social media). However, Zoe Kleinman’s article on the contribution
of social media to the change of languages is neutral. It does not explain
whether the contribution is positive or negative.

            The media
is playing a big role in explaining the relationship between technology and
social change. In the above articles, for example, the media has explained both
the positive and negative contribution of technology towards the emergence of
various changes in the society. The media is using real-life examples to
explain how the culture of our society is being shaped by the advancements in technology.

It also shows how society can utilize the technology to bring positive social
changes and avoid negative changes.

            The media
representation of the impact of technology and social change has no impact on
the inequalities in the society. This issue affects all people in the society
and therefore, all people are equally impacted. Technological advancement and
social change are both a crucial issue in the world today. Therefore, all
individuals need to understand how positive social effects can be achieved and
how negative impacts can be avoided.
