Tamisoglou (2010) looks at the perceptions of students towards History as a school
subject. The study was designed to investigate how students perceived the usefulness of history
as a school subject with specific attention given to the educational material employed in class
(Tamisoglou, 2010). This study employed focus group interviews across 8 schools, resulting in a
sample of over 200 individuals between the age of 12 and 15. The sample was obtained from
schools in North Greece.
Grever, Hadyn, and Ribbens (2008) take a different approach to the subject matter of
student perception of history. In their study, the look at the views of students pertaining to the

history and history in general. This study employed a sample of 442 young people living in
metropolitan areas in England and Netherlands.
Focus Group
The focus group survey method employed by Tamisoglou (2010) is a method in which a
sample of the target population, i.e., respondents, are placed in a single group and an interactive
group interview is conducted. Using this method, the researchers were able to get the
respondents to discuss their perceptions of history as a subject and its importance to a student’s
life. The data is collected using qualitative methods that provide the study in depth. Four factors
were taken into consideration in the group interview discussions held by the students, i.e., the
usefulness of school history, the kind of history that they like to be taught, the educational
materials of the subject, and the teacher’s contribution.
Grever, Hadyn, and Ribbens (2008) employed a questionnaire methodology to collect the
information pertaining to the views and opinions of students pertaining to history as a subject
and their identity. The study employed quantitative methods to collect and analyze the data or
information. The analysis was completed using SPSS, a statistical software used for analysis.
Differences pertaining to student perceptions as a result of differences between students as a
