Soft drinks are a very popular beverage made mostly of carbonated water, sugar, and added flavorings. Around 200 nations all around the world enjoy soda regularly with an annual consumption of more than 34 billion gallons. Soft drinks have proven to be America’s most well-known beverage, representing more than 25% of the total beverage market. The beginning of the 1990s were ideal for soda manufactuers with the average consumption of soft drinks in the United States being over 49 gallons, totaling 15 gallons more than the next most popular beverage, water. The raw materials of soft drinks are made of a few major components. The greatest component, carbonated water makes up a whopping 94% of a soft drink. Carbon dioxide acts somewhat as a preservative to keep the soft drink fresh and giving it a longer shelf life. Carbon dioxide is the most suitable gas for soft drinks because it is inert, non-toxic, inexpensive and easy to liquefy. The second major component is sugar, which adds up to about 7-12% of a soft drink. It is normally used in either a dry or liquid form that adds a sweetness and more body to the beverage. Sugar also acts as a balance for flavors and acids. The overall exact flavor of a soft drink greatly depends on a very intricate and well thought equilibrium of sweetness, tartness, and acidity (pH). Acids add an intensity to the basic rudimentary taste and enhance the drink by stimulating the saliva flow. The most common acid used in soft drinks is citric acid, which has a lemony flavor. Acids also reduce pH levels, preserving the beverage even more. There is an infinite range of flavorings used in sodas; they could consist of natural flavoring, natural identical flavorings which are chemically synthesized imitations, or artificial flavorings which are chemically unrelated to natural flavors. Also, emulsions are mixtures of liquids that are generally incompatible. They generally consist of water-based elements, some being, gums, pectins, or preservatives; and oil-based liquids, such as flavors, colors, or weighing agents. Also, Saponins enhance the foamy head of certain soft drinks, like cream soda giving them a different consistency.
