Smoking and drugs is really bad for you. Substance abuse, also known as drug abuse, is an excessive use of a substance (such as alcohol, narcotics, or cocaine) without medical justification. This is a serious problem because it is estimated that “20.6 million people ages 12 and up struggle with drug addiction in the United States.” Over 90% of the people addicted on drugs today drank alcohol, and smoked before they were 18 years old. Each year drug abuse causes millions of illnesses among Americans. Drug addiction can lead to mental disorders, Lung diseases, Hepatitis B and C, cancer, and strokes. Drug addiction is a brain disease because it changes the structure and function of the brain. It causes compulsive behavioral changes, memory loss, and it alters how a person thinks and the ability to make smart decisions. Heroin, followed by Marijuana is the most commonly used drug in the state of New Jersey. Millions of people are getting addicted to drugs even though they are told that drugs are dangerous and bad for you. Some people get addicted to drugs because they were experimenting after they had a bad thing happen in their lives; the events stressed them out to the point where they used drugs to make themselves try to feel better. Drug addiction can also be possible because of genetics. We have genes inside of us that can be passed on to and become addicted. These genes in our brain urges a person to use and become addicted. Drug addiction can be treated these treatments help people stop using drugs and teach them how to fight the urge to use drugs again. ┬áTreatment will include therapy/ counseling, detoxification, and in some cases medicine. Some treatments happen in hospitals where people will have to stay for weeks or even months. Other treatment happen in a intensive patient facility. At this facility you will meet for the and have a sponsor who would be available to you at all times staying in treatment is the most important thing you can do for your recovery. This will help you stay focus on your treatment and prevent relapsing. 90% of people that need drug rehab do not receive it. It cost the government 14.6 billion dollars a year for drug abuse treatments. This includes health cost, hospitalization, and government specialty treatments state funded rehabilitation centers are available for inpatient, outpatient, and hospitalization support. These centers use government money that is distributed by the state to help, people who are in recovery, and don’t have a lot of money or health insurance. The cost of treating drug abuse is estimated to be 14.6 billion dollars. This includes health cost, hospitalization, and government specialty treatments. Drug abuse treatments save on health care cost because it lowers the risk of developing illness caused from drug use. It also prevents crimes because people who use drugs cause domestic violence. Another benefit drug treatment programs have is it gives mothers who have lost their children because of neglect and drug use the opportunity to get them back.
