Smart Data, intelligently prepared from big data by
using analytics, gives businesses and governments the power to do what they do
better, faster and more efficiently. The Süddeutsche Zeitung, for
example, used water consumption data from Munich Waterworks to accurately identify
when the final game of FIFA’14 was most interesting. I find the application of big
data analytics in security fascinating and hence, aspire to become a research
professional at an academic or commercial, research-oriented organization in
order to provide fruitful solutions. I believe a Master of Science degree in
Informatics at the Technical University of Munich will up-skill my desired
areas and put me in the right path to achieve my goals.

During my under graduation, I gained practical
knowledge through industrial trainings and an Internship. My training at HCL Infosystems
was my first exposure in an IT firm. I developed an interest for server
administration, which I was exposed to during my training programme at HCL.
This drove me to self-study server administration concepts such as user and
group management, network access and data security using Windows Server in
Microsoft Virtual Academy. Later I took up the Windows Server 2012 R2 exam and earned
the Microsoft Certified Professional title. In my second industrial training at
Ashok Leyland, I focused on the application of IT in Vehicle Manufacturing
namely ‘Telematics’. I gave a seminar for ‘Industrial training – I’ in my 5th
semester where I explained concepts such as automotive
navigation systems and fleet telematics.

My internship at IBM presented me the opportunity to
get hands-on experience in cloud computing. I used IBM Bluemix with Eclipse to
create and deploy web applications in the cloud. I also did a thorough research
on the market players for cloud, especially on Google Analytics. I generated a
tracking ID for my blog that enabled me to gain insights about my blog’s
visitors through data. As a result, I was able to pick up the foundations of Business
Intelligence. This knowledge obtained from my internship motivated me to
conceptualize the idea of a Crypto System that allows its users to securely
share data with others in cloud. I, along with my team members developed this system
for our mini project in third year. For my final year project, I worked under
the guidance of my supervisor to provide a solution for the well-defined
problem of shoulder-surfing attacks. I researched existing systems for its
vulnerabilities and proposed a new system – ‘SteganoPin’ that prevents this ATM
fraudulent. The idea was further developed with the help of my supervisor. I presented
the paper in a national conference and it was also published in an
international journal.

In addition to academics, I was also actively
involved in social voluntary work and extra-curricular activities. In 2014
& 2015, I did voluntary service for e-CAP 2k14, an environmental awareness campaign.
I helped in spreading awareness about e-waste among school children by doing
presentations in various schools around Chennai. As the class representative of
my class, I was the main point of contact for all important activities
concerning our class. This helped in boosting my social skills to a great
extent. I’ve organized several technical and cultural events inside and outside
my campus and have also participated in workshops such as R programming and cyber
security to learn more on these topics.

graduation, I was recruited by Cognizant Technology Solutions India Private Ltd.
I’m working as a Software Developer in a scrum team. I was always curious about
other SDLC processes and therefore, took initiatives to participate in Requirements-gathering
meetings and triage meetings to better understand required functionalities through
which I gained a solid grasp of business requirements.

motivation behind choosing this particular program is due to the possibility to
combine Data Analytics with Security along with its additional emphasis on
practical training. It provides a unique opportunity to complete an Interdisciplinary
Project (IDP) as well as two practical courses. Modules such as ‘Mining Massive
Datasets’ & ‘Security Engineering’ are of particular interest to me; my knowledge
in Data Analytics and Security, which I obtained during my bachelors in subjects
like ‘Data Mining’ and ‘Network Security’, will be improved by taking these
modules. I look forward to contribute to the research work conducted by the ‘Chair
for Information Systems’. The work aligns with my interests, especially in projects
such as ‘Big Data Innovation Lab’ and ‘eGovernment Monitor’, all of whom would
greatly improve my learning curve. It would be an absolute honour to work under
Prof. Dr. Helmut Krcmar. Exposure to topics such as Business analytics and Data
Visualization would assist me in tailoring the program towards my goal. I hope
my academic credential along with my strong desire towards computer science grant
me the opportunity to pursue M.Sc Informatics at your university.
