Before the family set off on their journey to Tennessee, the grandmother is dressed up delicately with a navy blue dress, a big black valise and “a navy blue straw sailor hat with a bunch of white violets on the brim”(O’Connor 4) to show the others that she is a lady. The “navy blue straw sailor hat” the grandmother wears represents her fallacious morality. Her act of dressing up for a car accident shows that she is not concerned with her and her family’s lives; instead, what she really worries about is her ladylike figure. Prior to meeting the Misfit, the grandmother exposes her selfishness and her false virtue, which eventually lead to the tragedy of her entire family. Later when the car accident happens, confronting the Misfit, the grandmother attempts to “reach up to adjust her hat brim as if she were going to the woods with Misfit but it came off in her hand. She stood staring at it and after a second she let it fall on the ground”(O’Connor 20). With the fear of death, the grandmother lets go off her moral code (hat) and abandons her deceptive behavior. She eventually accepts the God and finds salvation, telling Misfit that he is “one of her babies,” and “one of her own children”(O’Connor 28). Her genuine action of seeing the Misfit as a person who is deserving of concern and care proves the presence of grace within her. Although the Misfit rejects her and shoots her in the chest, she dies with an innocent smile on her face. O’Connor depicts the changing state of the grandmother to illustrate the complexity in human nature and exemplify the fact that everyone could have the chance for spiritual salvation.
