Resistive movements causes the muscles to contract against an external resistance such as dumbbell, resistance bands and tubes, or own bodyweight in order to gradually reintroduce and increase some strength, tone, mass and endurance to the injured muscle. Resistive movements cause microscopic damage or tears to the muscle cells, which in turn are quickly repaired by the body to help the muscles regenerate and grow stronger. The breakdown of the muscle fibre is called “catabolism,” and the repair and re-growth of the muscle tissue is called “anabolism.” Resistive movements brakes down the muscle fibres in order to repair and re-growth the muscle tissue. As a result of resistance exercise testosterone, insulin-like growth factor, growth hormone, protein, and other nutrients rush to the muscle to help repair the muscles to make them stronger. This healing, repairing and re-growth keeps continue after the exercise has already been finished as muscles grow during downtime therefore it is necessary to leave time between workouts for proper recovery. As part of the rehabilitation process: Very gentle resisting movement exercises can be introduced to the injured structure as long as the range of movement exercises are done relatively pain free. Starting with light overloading the injured area, then gradually and systematically increasing the load. The use of free-weights, resistance bands, weights machine or own body weights will strengthen the injured area and will provide certain amount of stability of the joints and muscles. For example standing dumbbell press, alternate dumbbell curl, press-ups are used as rehabilitation for frozen shoulder.
