are focussing their attention on the design and synthesis of novel dynamic
metal complexes from bioactive ligands. Schiff bases are the class of ligands exhibiting
interesting coordination modes towards metal ions 1- 3. The
azomethine linkage in Schiff base (-C=N-) is responsible for the biological
activities such as antibacterial,
anti-proliferative, antimalarial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antipyretic
properties. Antitumor, antibacterial, antifungal and herbicidal
activities 4. Schiff bases exhibit very important roles in
coordination chemistry as they form stable complexes with transition metal
ions. Metal Schiff base complexes have been well known for their easy
synthesis, stability and wide application5-7. A large number of
Schiff base complexes have been reported so far, and their biological and catalytic
activity have been studied 8-14.  O-Vanillin is also the most
prominent principal flavour and aroma compound in vanilla which is used as a
food flavouring agent in foods, beverages and pharmaceuticals.6 Because of its
numerous biological activities such as anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antiviral
activities, it is extensively studied in medicinal field.7-10 In addition, it
also can be used as efficient herbicide, pesticide bactericides11 and Schiff
bases containing o-vanillin moiety form stable complexes with various metal ions.12,13
Hence, o-Vanillin is an optimal candidate for synthesizing various aromatic Schiff
bases with significant bioactivities. In the present work, we discussed about the synthesis, docking
biological activity, cytotoxicity, DNA binding and photo cleavage studies of
the ligand and its metal complexes.
