Of Mice and Men EssayJohn Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. The novel starts just off the Salinas river a few miles south of Soledad, in California during the mid 1930’s. The novel is about two migrant workers named George Milton and, Lennie Small who have a dream of owning their own ranch someday, the only problem is that no matter what George does Lennie is always getting into trouble. Lennie’s Mental disability combined with his unknown strength is the reason why their dream has not come true. If Lennie knew how to react his actions he has done he would have got in way less trouble than he did. Lennie’s mental capacities aren’t smart enough to react to the consequences of his actions. “Jus’ wanted to feel that girl’s dress- jus’ wanted to pet it like it was a mouse- Well, how the hell did she know you jus’ wanted to feel her dress? She jerks back and you hold on like it was a mouse. She yells and we got to hide in an irrigation ditch all day with guys lookin’ for us, and we got to sneak out in the dark and get outa the country (11). In the first chapter Lennie went up to a girl in weed to feel her dress, due to him being really big she got scared and let out a large squawk, George heard the scream and started yelling for Lennie to stop but instead of stopping Lennie panicked more and then he held on the girls dress tighter. “Well, that girl rabbits in an’ tells the law she been raped.  The guys in Weed start a party out to lynch Lennie (42). The girl accused Lennie of rape and then the guys in Weed go after Lennie which makes George and Lennie have to flee. If Lennie knew how to react he would of let the girl and told her that he was feeling her dress, there won’t be anyone after George and Lennie.  Well, how the hell did she know you jus’ wanted to feel her dress? She jerks back and you hold on like it was a mouse. (p.11). Lennie doesn’t know how to react when something bad happens he just freezes and holds on tighter, if he Manzara 2knew how to react he would of let go of the dress and told her that he was just trying to feel it and then she would not have accused him of rape. Lennie doesn’t know what his strength is capable of. Lennie looked sadly up at him. “They was so little,” he said, apologetically. “I’d pet ’em, and pretty soon they bit my fingers and I pinched their heads a little and then they was dead- because they was so little (9-10). In the first chapter, we learned that Lennie killed all the mice that his Aunt Clara gave him, when the mice bite him he will pinch their head and then they die. Lennie doesn’t realize that he is strong enough that even by pinching the mice head a tiny bit he would be able to kill them. And Lennie said softly to the puppy, “Why do you got to get killed? You ain’t so little as mice. I didn’t bounce you hard.” (85). Lennie also doesn’t realize that even bouncing the puppy he would be able to kill it. “But you ain’t gonna get in no trouble, because if you do, I won’t let you tend the rabbits.” (16). This shows the consequences if Lennie gets in trouble. This also shows that he kills them accidentally and if he knew his strength he would of bounced the puppy lighter because he doesn’t want to get in trouble which will make him not be allowed to tend the rabbits. If Lennie knew his strength he would have taken the rabbit more gently because he would have never wanted something to go wrong. If Lennie was smarter and know his strength is capable of, his dream would have come true. After Lennie kills the puppy Lennie accidentally kills Curley’s wife just by shaking her to stop screaming. “Don’t you go yellin’,” he said, and he shook her; and her body flopped like a fish. And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck (91). If Lennie was smart he would know what his strength can do then he would not have killed Curley’s wife by shaken her because he would have shook her not as hard or yelled at her to be quiet. “Well, that girl rabbits in an’ tells the law she been raped. The guys in Weed start a party out to lynch Lennie. So we sit in a irrigation ditch under water all the rest of that day. Got on’y our heads sticking outa water, an’ up under the grass that sticks out from the side of the ditch. An’ that night we scrammed outa there.” (42). This shows that George and Lennie have to flee weed before they are able to collect their paycheck. If Lennie was smarter and if he knew what his strength is capable of there would be no reason for them to flee from weed, they would have been able to collect their paychecks and do a few more months of work and then they will be able to buy their own ranch. I was feelin’ pretty smart. Manzara 3I turns to Lennie and says, ‘Jump in.’ An’ he jumps. Couldn’t swim a stroke. He damn near drowned before we could get him. An’ he was so damn nice to me for pullin’ him out. (40). This shows that Lennie isn’t smart enough understand if someone plays a joke on him if George tells him to do something he would do it without thinking and not understand if something he said was a joke. If Lennie was smart enough to know what his strength can do, he would have never killed anything, never get in trouble or never had to flee from weed.Lennie’s Mental disability combined with his unknown strength was the reason why their dream has not come true. If Lennie was smarter and knew what his strength is capable of he would not have been in less trouble and know how to be able to react to the consequences of what he had done. These are the two main reasons why their dream has not come true. If Lennie didn’t get in trouble by feeling the girls dress George and Lennie would have been able to collect their paychecks and sooner or later they will be able to buy their farm. If Lennie was capable of doing these two things George and Lennie’s dream would have come true.
