Michelle given to their students. Teachers are doing
Michelle Obama once said, ” If my future were determined just by my performance on a standardized test, I wouldn’t be here. I can guarantee you that.” Standardized testing is an unfair and inaccurate form of judging a person’s intellect, and should not be used. Every student has a mind of their own, and no two students are exactly the same. Standardized testing does not help a child in real life situations and make students believe that one test determines their future and intellect. There are many reasons why standardized tests should not be used, but the following reasons are the two main reasons; standardized tests has not improved student achievement and is not fair to everyone.Standardized tests do not improve student achievement, studies show that after the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) act was passed in 2002, the US ranking on the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) has gone down. Before the NCLB act the US ranked 18th on PISA in math but had dropped to 31st by 2009, after the act was passed. There was a similar drop in science and there was no change in reading performance. Finland on the other had ranked first on the PISA ranking without standardized tests being given to their students. Teachers are doing what is known as “teaching to the test”, which is a usually said when the curriculum is heavily focused on preparing students for standardized tests. Due to the method of “teaching to the test” many students are not learning things that will be necessary in their future lives.Albert Einstein once said, ” Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” This applies to standardized test today because it is testing students on their ability to remember everything they have learned, not accounting for the fact that no two students’ minds are the same, some students need more time to process and understand the information being given to them. Standardized tests also do not account for learning disabilities, such as Dyslexia or Dyscalculia. Which can have a really big impact on the child’s score, especially if the test is timed. If a child does not perform well they will believe that they are not smart enough to do well. Though there are many reasons opposing standardized tests there are a few reasons that are support standardized testing. Many people believe standardized testing is good for the following reasons, according to Aaron Churchill from the Thomas B. Fordham Institute; standardized exams are designed to be objective measures, which means when grading the tests the grades are meant to be accurate. The objective of standardized exams yields comparability of student achievement, which allows parents to see if their child has reached the state benchmark, The test data also remains the best way to hold schools accountable for their academic performance. Though these are very good reasons for standardized testing, it should still not be issued anymore more. Every year across America, standardized testing is becoming more and more popular, but just because it is popular does not mean it should be used. These tests contain inaccurate information because of the large amounts of stress and pressure the students experience before, during, and after the test. It lacks to measure other important skills, such as, creativity and motivation. A child’s future should not be determined by of a standardized test, in other words, standardized test should not be a requirement.
