Lasty the death penalty does not achieve justice because everyone is innocent until proven guilty and if the wrong person is accused and the executed, it could lead to even more problems since you took away a falsely accused persons life away. By sentencing someone on death row and giving them the death penalty, it shows that they have no place in society which is what many many believe because they took away the life of another when in reality it could be a set up and they end up executing the wrong person who was found guilty. In lines 23-25 of Text 1, “When a condemned convict is taken off death row, it does not imply that the system is broken and that the death penalty should be abolished but that the system is working exactly as it should- executing only those who deserve it…” Meaning that many believe that only those who truly deserve it should be executed since they took away the life of another and made their families feel pain, they should have to feel the same thing almost like having karma. As well as Although there are other punishments that have been used in the past we no longer think that it is approved in society. The author states in lines 27-29 of Text 2, “The death penalty is also unjust because it is sometimes inflicted on innocent people. Since 1900, 350 people have been wrongly convicted of homicide or capital rape. The death penalty makes it impossible to remedy any such mistakes.” Resulting in the fact that once you take an innocent person’s life away there’s no way you can redo it and have them back after knowing they are innocent and that it wasn’t really them committing the crime, which results in time being the most crucial thing when someone is on the path of getting put on death row and deciding when the death penalty will come into place. Having to show that anyone is innocent until proven guilty is a large key to making sure those who are sentenced to the death penalty truly deserve it.
