However, surveys also have their disadvantages and weak
points that must be considered.

As previously stated a good method of primary research are
surveys. Surveys are a process of gathering information from individuals, they
have a variety of purposes, and can be conducted in many ways. Surveys can be done
through a printed questionnaire, over the telephone, by mail, in person or on
the web. You collect the information through a series of standardized
procedures so that each participant is asked the same questions consistently.
It involves asking people for information in some controlled format. Depending
on what is being analysed, the participants being surveyed may be representing
themselves, their employer, or some organization to which they belong, in this
case my survey was asking a series of questions regarding student’s opinions on
choosing universities. Among the different methods of data gathering for
research purposes, the survey method is preferred by many researcher’s due to
its various advantages, strengths and benefits. For example, high representativeness,
due to the usually large number of people who answers survey, the data being
gathered holds a better description of the relative characteristics of the
general population involved in the study, they also provide a high level of
general capability in representing a large population. Another benefit of using
surveys for research is that its relatively cheap, you only need to pay for the
production of survey questionnaires and sometimes can get this done for free by
using websites such as ‘Survey Monkey’. Surveys are also convenient for data
gathering as they can be administrated to participants using different medias,
the most common being online.

When conducting a research project, a pilot study can play a
very important role prior to conducting a full-scale research project. Pilot
studies are small-scale, initial studies which aim to investigate whether
crucial components of a main study will be feasible. For example, they may be
used in an attempt to predict an appropriate sample size for the full-scale
project and/or to improve upon various aspects of the study design, this is to
avoid wasting time and resources.

There are many advantages that primary research provides for
example you can address specific research issues, which in this case means that
you can easily find out student’s opinions on university without having to
search through other less precise information.  Primary research doesn’t only allow you to
focus on exact issues, it also permits you to have an advanced level of control
over how the information is collected. In this way, you can decide on how many
responses you collect, location of research and time frame for completing the
project research. Another benefit of primary research is that the information is
your own and is generally not shared with others. Thus, information can be kept
hidden from competitors and can potentially offer an “information advantage”.

For my Sociology assessment, I had to design a survey and
pilot of around 8 to 10 questions regarding the claims made in an article about
why students go to university and how they choose which one they attend. Primary
research involves gathering new data that has not been collected before for
example, surveys.
