Edgar Allen Poe was born in Boston, MA on January 19, 1809. He was buried in West Minister Hall and Burying Ground. He was forty when he died. His first job was in the Army. He got kicked out at age twenty-one for drinking. Poes father and mother died before Edgar was three years old. John and Frances Allan raised as a foster child in Richmond, Virginia. Egar’s father, David, was an alcoholic and abandoned Edgar and his two siblings after Elizabeth’s death. He supposedly died two days later. His first book is Tamerlane. The poem was the first published collection was Tamerlane and Other Poems. That collection, with only fifty copies printed, was not created with Edgar’s real name but by Botonian. The original poem was 403 lines but got bumped down to 223 lines for its conclusion. While still a young teenager, Poe received special tutoring to gain early entrance into the new University of Virginia, probably on the recommendation of General John H. Cocke. Edgar enrolled at the University on February 14, 1826. Edgar Allan Poe has two siblings. His brothers’ name is William Leonardo Poe. He also has a sister named Rosalie Mackenzie Poe. The order of their birth dates goes William, Edgar and then Rosalie. William died on August 1st, 1831. The next one to die was Edgar on October 7th, 1849. The last person to die was Rosalie who died on July 21, 1874. Sarah Elmira Royster Shelton was Edgar’s first love shortly before his death in 1841, they got engaged. Their relationship started when she was fifteen. It ended because of her father. He didn’t want some thirty-seven year old banging his daughter. Edgar was studying at the University of Virginia. Virginia Poe was Edgar Allan Poe’s wife. Virginia was his first cousin who became his wife at age thirteen. Although the marriage is inappropriate to many, she became the central female in his life. Back in the 1800’s, they were allowed to marry their underage first cousin. He moved his family to a little cottage in Fordham, New York on January 30, 1847. Virginia died of tuberculsis in Fordham, New York. Today, he would be 208 years old. How he died is still a mystery. They say that he had a high amount of alcohol in his body. He wrote with a cat on his shoulder. The cats name was Mittens. It was all black with little white paws. He would share his food with the cat. The cat used to follow him around everywhere he goes, to the kitchen, the landry room, the living room, and also, the bathroom. Here’s another fun fact: the cat would actually use the bathroom with him. The Tell- Tale Heart is a scary book just like the rest of his books. The Tell-Tale Heart is about this madman who is paranoid about this old man’s eye. It was an eye of a vulture. The eye was pale blue so it made it look ghost-like. Every night the madman (or narrator) would creep into the old man’s room and just stared at the eye. On the eight night, this idea popped into his head. He thought “Wouldn’t he just be a lot easier if he dropped dead?” The madman crept into the old man’s room. He opens the old man’s room door ever so slightly. (creek) The old man jerks up at the sound of his door being opened. He shouted “Who’s there?” The madman stood there without making a sound, peering into the room where the old man sat up on his bed. After the old man went back to sleep, the madman decapitated his body. Then, he cut the old man’s arms and legs off. The madman his all of his body parts. When the police came to ask questions about the missing man, the madman claimed that he didn’t see him. The madman heared screaming inside his head. So, he started screaming too! Then he riped the floor boards up where he hid the body. He showed the police the old man’s body. He got sent to jail for life. (Remember kids, there is always a creep in every neighborhood!) I loved this book. This book is one of the Top 10 scary stories written by Edgar Allan Poe.
