Corporate Social Responsibility has been a business
component for decades and its purpose is to guide organizations to act in an
ethical and transparent way that is compatible with the sustainable development
of society. As the result of this competitive market, many higher education
institutions have adopted this business approach to seek alternative ways to
achieve sustainability and to survive in this highly competitive education
industry. More and more Universities around the world are incorporating this
strategy into their operations, including their research and teaching methods,
saying that higher education institutions cannot be sustainable without being
social responsible, and it is better when they give back to society, especially
in terms of ensuring sufficient funding and making education accessible to all
students, despite their social and economic background. But what are the
reasons Universities should incorporate social responsibility into their strategies?
There are many reasons for that but one that is in in top of mind among today’s
university students is the environmental issue. A survey on sustainability
found that 45% of respondents are now likely to pay more for products and
services from a company with a reputation for being environmentally friendly. Many
Universities now devote sections on their website, discussing their commitment
to environmental sustainability. The most appropriate example for this specific
issue is Imperial’s College of London CSR approach. As a scientific institution
which undertakes energy intensive research, Imperial College of London
recognizes the importance of having an environmental sustainability and being responsible
for the reduction of these effects in order, to protect future generations.

It is important to emphasize the accomplishments that
this college has achieved in their effort of being social responsible towards
the environment. First of all, ICL has created a carbon management system in which
they use a strategy called Continuous Optimization (ConCom), where they efficiently
optimize carbon dioxide, which is a greenhouse gas that is responsible for the
cause of global warming. This strategy monitors and manages the buildings and
it is also used by Estate Facilities. It has enabled the college to reduce
carbon emissions, increase energy efficiency and lower operating costs. Their
efforts have been recognized by S-Lab and their strategy was also a winner in
the national awards scheme. In real terms, the College has reduced its overall
carbon dioxide per staff / students by 24.72% since 2005. Furthermore, the
College has also a great impact and commitment on minimizing waste and
harnessing the benefit of its waste resources by reusing and recycling glass,
general waste, dry mixed products, paper etc. By doing that, they contribute to
the conversation of natural resources, saving energy, protecting the environment
and reducing landfill.
