College classes, high school and other grades do not often teach children to think for themselves. The idea of a typical course in the United States involves lecture and taking notes. Once enough of the information has been spoken or read, the students are graded on what they are able to remember from studying or reading. Unfortunately, these classes do little to stimulate thinking in the minds of these individuals.Lecture ClassesFrom high school into university classes, most students inundated with nothing but lecture and note taking do not learn to think about complex matters. Some courses from one college to another provide these opportunities, but they are not frequently in the required material. Laboratory and workshops give those attending the chance to think about the subject matter, encourage critical thinking and help the student progress from one idea to another. It is not until later in the college years that students are given the ability to expand their voice and increase cognitive skills. While other classes only have lecture and reading until tests start.Regurgitation in ClassesThe primary teaching method for most professors and instructors is to lecture on the course material. Sometimes there is discussion, but often students take notes and listen or read. Many then only cram as much data into their minds until quiz or test time. This provides only a minimal absorption of the information which may dissipate after so many days or weeks. Then, the process repeats until the end of the semester. It usually starts in high school with teachers not caring or checking if anyone is learning anything. The more students in a class, the less likely the instructor is able to tutor or give additional assistance to those that struggle with the material.Methods of LearningAround the world, professors and teachers learned through trial and error what works best for students. The methods of learning are different based on the individual student. Some find reading easier, but others absorb more through hearing or seeing the information. And there are those that find doing the best way to progress through a course. In different countries, these methods have become important, so students are able to retain the knowledge from the course. Some schools and colleges in the United States adopt these processes, but there are not enough following suit. It is crucial that professors and instructors teach how the individual needs for learning to increase.Exceptions to LectureWhile most lecture classes exist in the college and high school curriculum, there are exceptions. Most non-lecture classes exist in math and labs. With mathematics, the student must learn how to work through the problem and apply different equations and formulas. In labs, teachers have the pupils working either alone or together to see, observe or prod something into action. These classes rely on observation and variables. Some may find progressing through math and science difficult, but the classes are often engaging and full of activity. This tends to increase participation and overall grades when the students actually try in class.What to do for StudentsIt is critical to understand how best to help students to learn. This could lead teachers to workshops on how to instruct better or demonstrate how best to capture the attention of these pupils. The increasing concern of education in the country merits discovering how best to resolve the matter. An increasing number of states have lower test scored churned out when lecture is the only way to teach. With the addition of common core classes, all individuals within the school could face difficulty in making the necessary grades. More money should transfer to a school with greater needs. Extracurriculars and engaging courses provide more to entertain and capture the attention of each student.It may be necessary to separate students into classes based on how they learn. Then, the instructor could focus on these methods which may prove greater results in testing. Other processes could include tossing out traditional testing and adopting what other countries have initiated. This would change the focus from tests, quizzes and cramming to learning and absorb more information. Breaks between long classes to de-stress and give a sense of relief are important as well.Achieving the GoalUnfortunately, the students are often unable to change these methods. It is up to parents and concerned citizens to bring these ideas and concepts to school boards and education officials. Contacting local political leaders and teachers may increase chances of modifying these processes for the better. Creating organizations and working together may elevate the concerns and assist in changing lecture and regurgitation already in place. With these actions, it is possible that education may rise once again in the United States. Then, the most important decisions the country faces could resolve through informed thought and action.
