NTPC LIMITED is the largest Indian state-owned electric
utilities company.

This is my mini project which was done on site at NTPC
RAMAGUNDAM during summer of 2nd year of my engineering. It was the time of
opportunity where I had the experience of power generation in one of the
India’s biggest thermal generation plants. It was time of excitement as I could
apply my knowledge from books and experience it in a practical way.

BACKGROUND

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

 

This project was
taken by my team as we wanted to understand on how all the theory which is in
books be applied at largest thermal production plants across the world. It was
mainly done to enhance my knowledge and understand in depth on how thermal
plants are run, maintained in a very safest way and on how to improve
efficiency.

Rankine cycle is
the cycle which is ideal as a thermodynamic cycle that is used to convert heat
into mechanical work. The steam produced by boiling water is sent in a closed
loop which turns the turbine thus generating power. The pump is used for
pressurizing the working fluid i.e. water received from the condenser. After
passing through the turbine, the steam is condensed and recycled. The
challenges in the working of cycle were identified during the various stages of
the project.

Thermal power
plants produce a large amount of energy depending on the amount of fuel
available. There are variations in the design due to different fuels used in
the plant to boil the water. Coal is used to heat the water which converts into
steam rotating the turbine at great speeds which produces electricity. I learnt
and understand various components used at thermal power stations.

 

The various
components of the thermal power plant is shown in the figure below:

1) Improve the
effectives and efficiency of the thermal power plant.

2) Identifying
any flaws in the system and process.

3) Understanding
the Rankine cycle used in Thermal power plants.

4) Studying
components individually, understanding maintenance of boiler, combustion, coal
handling plant, Turbine maintenance and Water treatment plant.

 

C.E 1.2.3 Nature
of my work:

During various
stages of the project I could practically experience process of thermal power
plant which required a lot of attention, stability and safety procedures for
the generation of electricity. Rankine cycle was clearly understood as the
project progressed. All the theoretical knowledge from my engineering was
applied practically in understanding of Rankine cycle and process od electric
generation in thermal power plant.

C.E 1.2.4 PEOPLE
INVOLVMENT:

 As the project progressed, we had a continuous
supervision and were helped by various employees in various departments which
helped to understand from the expertise about the process and work. They helped
me understand various components of the Thermal power plant like Cooling tower,
transformer, generator, turbine, condenser, pulveriser and many more.

Here is how the
hierarchy looked like. Mostly I had a very good support and help from
department supervisors and were given a head to monitor and as we progressed
from department to department.

 

 

 

 

 

 

As there are
many risks involved in the process we have a risk manager who was constantly
taking care of the risks involved. Risk management is crucial in the stages,
risk avoidance was introduced during the project.
