Bridging the cultural gap in IndiaIntroductionThe research mainly focus on bridging different cultural differences in India. India is one of the most diverse nation in the world. From dressing style to language, the country has been hailed as a standout amongst the most complex amalgamation of different cultural identities. As indicated by 2011 census of India, there were nearly 1,635 languages being spoken across the country. Most of these languages can be distinguished as dialects. Officially India has 22 recognized languages. India is not only occupied by individuals from single ethnicity but it has seen a migrants from all over the world. There are a wide range of ethnic groups who have relocated to India through the span of hundreds of years. These cultural differences in country can affect how individuals see others and themselves, which can influence how they associate with their colleagues. This can either make a bond to form or induce a gap. Employees in an organization are of different ethnicity, culture, and other differences that set people apart. Bridging cultural gap between people can be more advantages especially in a organization with multicultural workforce. Objectives and importance of the study Culture is a strong part of individuals’ lives. Culture can influence individual’s perspectives, values, expectations, loyalties, and their stresses and fears. It also makes us unique from others. When we are born in a region we grow up by our regional culture. The objective of this study is to understand the different cultures in India and to bridge the cultural communication gap among the people in the workspace. People will become more aware of how they respond to cultural differences.They will also learn the tools and strategies to better understanding of other cultures and to share and make use of knowledge across cultures.Ethnocentric Views of IndiansEthonocentrism is defined as the tendency to perceive one’s own cultural practices as normal or superior. It is centered on ones own ethinic group, practices, belifs etc. Ethnocentrism in a way can narrow down your choices and preferences. The main tension occurs when we are in contact with people who have different ideas than we do.Ethinicentrism in Indian Context. India is a country with diverse culture. According to recent findings of the NIBMG, based on the analysis of DNA samples collected from Indians belonging to 20 population groups, including different caste groups and tribals, we are descended primarily from four ancestral origins: North Indian, South Indian, Austro-Asian and Tibeto-Burman. There is a fifth niche grouping of the Andaman and Nicobar islanders who are descendants of Pacific Ocean migrants. The population was recorded around 1.3 billion in 2006 and is spread among 29 different stats. Each state has its own languages, religions, dance, music, architecture, food, and customs. The Indian culture, often labeled as an amalgamation of several various cultures, spans across the Indian subcontinent and has been influenced and shaped by a history that is several thousand years old. India is one of the most religiously and ethnically diverse nations in the world, with some of the most deeply religious societies and cultures. Religion plays a central and definitive role in the life of many of its people. Around eighty percent of Indians follow hindu religion. The culture, practices and beliefs of a hindu religion follower is highlt different from other religons.  The tensions between different religion still exist in different parts of india. Peple think their religion is superior than others. Eventhough the indian constitution gives equal respect to every religion, people are not ready to respect the religious belifs of each other. There are still tensions going on between hindus and muslims in several parts of india.  The political parties tak advantages of these inorder to gain support of a religious group and its followers. The current ruling party called Bharath Janatha Party (BJP). he BJP is a right-wing party, with close ideological and organisational links to the Hindu nationalist. People in india are classified into different classes based on their religion and cast. Hindus can be of Priests, Warriors Merchants, and laborers. The casr determines the respect you are given in the society and how wealthy you are to an extend. Intercast marriages are allowed by the government but people are not ready for it. Due to a large regional diversity, we find communities pitted up against each other ideologically, or for resources. There have been many cases of North Indian discriminating against those from the South, the mainland population isolating the North Easterns and a multitude of regional clashes. In a scenario where the country is so fragmented within itself, a foreigner seems even more alien, and a common enemy of all. Eventhough the government is coming up a lot of rules and regulations inorder to bring down these ratcial discriminations,Cross cultural differences of IndiansThe cultural difference between South and North India has become more obvious, that you feel they belong to two different continents. The separation between North and South India is seen in its culture, traditions, music, dance, geography, and politics. The South India has a development of coastal lifestyle that is absent in the North India. The Indian citizens, often look down upon each other. Where South Indians consider Northerners to be proud, and undisciplined, spoiled brats and the Northerners consider people from south to be narrow minded, backward people who do not associate with the rest of the nation. There is also a huge difference in the dressing patterns of people in south and northern part of  India, In Northern part of  India women wear kurtha and salwar while men wear shirt and pants and In South India women wear saris and men wear dhotis. However nowadays dressing styles have merged with western influences and boys and girls in both parts are today wearing jeans. The south Indians look at North Indians as a community that places importance on show, splendor, outlook and all other things considered trivial down under. The people from Bombay and north are more exposed to fashion, lavish spending, highly westernized in daily life and an undying urge to stand out in the society. The people in the south consider themselves to be leap years ahead when it comes to the topic of gray matter and achievements in education and personal lives. They speak better English, are widespread in the fields of engineering and entrepreneurship and are well read people. This is the point where south Indians seem to think they are one up compared to the north. Usually north Indians looks at South Indians as backward, narrow minded and a disconnected lot of people that at times suggests an alienating behaviour in ones own country. Language is one of the problem contributing to the diversity of India. Language is not only a problem in North-south communication but it is the same in the East-West context also. A proverb better describes India that “Every two miles the water changes, every four miles the speech.” The usage of common language in India like English, and Hindi, has shortened this barrier a little. But still there are a lot of confusion and prejudices prevails among people of north and south about the people of other regions.Individulasim and collectivism of IndiansThe degree of interdependence a society maintains among its members is the fundamental issue addressed in this dimension. In an Individualist society people are supposed to look after themselves and their direct family and in Collectivist society people belong to groups that take care of them in exchange for loyalty. India is a society with both collectivism and Individualism. The collectivism means that there will be a high preference for belonging to a larger social framework in which individuals are expected to act accordingly to the greater good of its group. In such case a particular action of an individual is influenced by various concepts such as the opinion of his/her family, extended family, neighbours, work group and other social networks to which he may have some affiliation toward. The employer and employee relationships are usually expectation based, The Loyalty by the employee and almost familial protection by the Employer. The Hiring and promotion decisions are mostly based on relationships that can be the key to everything in a Collectivist society. The Individualism in Indian society is seen as a result of its dominant religion or philosophy.Power Distance in Indian context  This context deals with the fact that all individuals in societies are not equal. Power Distance can be defined as the extent to which the less powerful members of institutions and organizations within a country expect and accept that power is distributed unequally. India scores high on this because they indicate appreciation for hierarchy and top-down structure in society or organizations. Indians usually encapsulate the attitude of using the following words and phrases that dependent on the boss or the power holder for direction, they accept the un-equal rights between the power-privileged and who are lesser down in the pecking order. They give meaning to ones work life and rewards for employees in exchange of loyalty. Real Power is centralized even though it does not appear to be and managers count on the obedience of his team members. Employees usually expect to be directed clearly about their functions and what is expected out of them and their attitude towards managers are formal. Communication is top down and directive in nature and negative feedbacks are never offered up the ladder.KineticsIndians are High Context not Low ContextThe terms ‘high-‘ and ‘low-context’ cultures are two extreme broad categories. In high-context cultures, how the things are done is not stated explicitly. Individuals within the culture just know cues such as body language can convey a huge amount of information. In case of low-context cultures information is conveyed typically with verbal language. For an outsider high-context culture can be extremely difficult to understand when compared to a typical low-context culture.Indian society is extremely high context. Because in Indian society especially hindu society it has a well-engrained caste system which dictates whole swathes of life and Indians are brought up with a implicit knowledge of different castes. In case of a archetypal Indian head wobble. It is confusing for an outsider to identify whether the person saying yes? no? maybe? don’t know? Because in India a head wobble can mean all these things. The context of the action will be clear to a person familiar with the culture but not so for an outsider. India languages reflect this and linguistics can also be a reason for India’s high-context culture. For example in English language the use of pronoun ‘you’ refers to anyone but in Hindi there are three equivalent pronouns such as aap, tum and tu that are used in different contexts depending on whom the person is speaking to. People who know the language usually knows which form to use instinctively but an outsider risk offending someone if they get it wrong.Recommendations Benifit from diversityOrganizations and society can benefit from diverse culture in the country. One of the advantage of diversity is that it gives opportunity for employees’ in personal growth by being exposed to new ideas, cultures and perspectives that can help them to reach out intellectually and gain clearer view of their surroundings and their place in the world. Interacting with culturally diverse co-workers can slowly break down all subconscious barriers of ethnocentrism and xenophobia and encourage employees to be more well-rounded members of the society. This can only break down communication barriers over the long-term, but initial period of first impressions and co-workers’ orientation can be difficult to control when cultures clash. Diversity can strengthen organization’s relationships with specific customer groups by making communication more effective.Diversity can bring about an increase in productivity and competitive advantages in a organization. Diversity in leadership within a firm allows individuals to bring in new skills and methods for achieving unity within their groups. Cultural Diversity can increase creativity within a workspace because heterogeneous groups are cross-fertilizing one another within the organization. When there are more diverse ideas suggested, the chances of finding a workable answer is also more.
