Poultry farming means ‘raising various
types of domestic birds commercially for the purpose of meat, eggs and feather
production’. The most common and widely raised poultry birds are chicken. About
5k million chickens are being raised every year as a source of food (both meat
and eggs of chicken). The chickens which are raised for eggs are called layer
chicken, and the chickens which are raised for their meat production are called
broiler chickens. The UK and USA consume more meat and eggs of chicken than
other countries of the world. On an average the UK alone consumes more than 29
million chicken eggs everyday. However, in a word commercial poultry farming is
very necessary to meet up the demand of animal nutrition (eggs and meat).
Commercial poultry farming is also very profitable. And commercial poultry
farming business is one of the traditional business ventures. Here we are
describing more about the advantages of poultry farming business and the steps
for running this business.

Benefits of Poultry Farming

Poultry farming business has numerous
benefits. As a result many farmers prefer to invest in this business. People
generally establish poultry farm for the purpose of producing eggs, meat and
generating high revenue from these products. Billions of chickens are being
raised throughout the world as a good source of food from their eggs and meat.
However, here I am shortly describing the main benefits of poultry farming.

*The main benefit of poultry farming is,
it doesn’t require high capital for starting. You need just basic capital to
start raising poultry. And most of the poultry birds are not costly enough to
start raising.

*Poultry farming doesn’t require a big
space unless you are going to start commercially. You can easily raise some
birds on your own backyard with one or numerous coops or cages. So, if you are
interested in poultry farming, then you can easily do it on your own backyard
with several birds.

*Commercial poultry farming business
also ensure high return of investment within a very short period. Some poultry
birds like broiler chickens take shorter duration of time to mature and
generating profit.

*Poultry farm structures do not require
high maintenance. You can minimize diseases and illness in poultry by following
proper hygiene and care. Diseases are less in some poultry birds like quails,
turkeys etc.

*In most cases, you don’t need any
license. Because almost all types of poultry birds are domestic. Although, if
you need license from the relevant authority it is also easy for poultry.

*Poultry provides fresh and nutritious
food and has a huge global demand. Global consumers of poultry products prefer
them due to their nutrients and freshness. Poultry products are not much
expensive and most of the people can afford those.

*Marketing poultry products is very
easy. There is an established market for poultry products in almost all places
of the world. So, you don’t have to think about marketing your products. You
can easily sell the products in your nearest local market.

*Poultry farming creates income and
employment opportunities for the people. Unemployed educated youth can easily
create a great income and employment opportunity for them by raising poultry
commercially. Women and students can also do this business along with their
daily activities.

*Almost all bank approve loans for this
types of business venture. So, if you want to start this business commercially,
then you can apply for loans to your local banks.

*There are many more benefits of poultry
farming along with the above mentioned benefits. Start raising and you will
gradually learn everything.

Over the past decades, the poultry sector’s growth and trends
towards intensification and concentration have given rise to a number of
environmental concerns. A direct consequence of these structural changes
(industrialization, geographical concentration and intensification) in poultry
production is that far more waste than can be managed by land disposal is
produced, resulting in environmental problems. This paper analyses the
environmental impacts arising from intensive poultry production, evaluating
such impacts across the food chain and all environmental media. The paper also
presents technical options to mitigate environmental impacts, such as
improvements to farm management, animalwaste management and nutrition
management, along with options to reduce the impacts of intensive feed

Poultry Farmers

Poultry farmers are responsible for the
daily care of chickens, turkeys, ducks, or other poultry species that are
raised for meat production purposes. (Egg farming is covered in a separate
career article).

Routine responsibilities for a poultry
farmer include distributing feed, administering medications, cleaning
enclosures, ensuring proper ventilation, removing dead or sick birds,
maintaining facilities in good working order, monitoring flock behavior to detect
any signs of illness, transporting birds to processing plants, restocking
enclosures with young birds, keeping detailed records, and overseeing various
poultry farm employees.

Poultry producers work in conjunction
with veterinarians to ensure the health of their flocks. Livestock feed sales
representatives and animal nutritionists may also advise poultry producers on
creating nutritionally balanced rations for their facilities.

As is the case with many animal farming
careers, a poultry farmer may be required to work long hours that can include
nights, weekends, and holidays. Work may be carried out in varying weather
conditions and extreme temperatures. Workers may also be exposed to diseases
that are commonly found in poultry waste products, such as Salmonella or E.

Career Options

Most poultry farmers raise one species
of fowl for a specific purpose. Nearly two-thirds of poultry revenues come from
the production of broilers (young chickens raised for meat). Approximately
one-quarter of poultry revenues come from egg production. The remaining poultry
revenues are derived from the production of other species such as turkeys,
ducks, game birds, ostriches, or emus.

According to the USDA, most U.S. poultry
farms involved in meat production are concentrated in the Northeast, Southeast,
Appalachian, Delta, and Corn Belt regions (which places them in close proximity
to the majority of poultry processing centers). The state with the most broiler
farms is Georgia, followed by Arkansas, Alabama, and Mississippi.

The U.S. is the second largest exporter
of broilers, second only to Brazil.

Most farms that produce broilers are
large commercial operations involved in indoor broiler production. Other
options include focusing on free-range broiler production or organic broiler

Poultry Business

Poultry is the most progressive animal
enterprise today. It is one of the world’s major and fastest producers of meat
while in the Philippines, it has been a significant contributor to the
country’s agriculture sector.

In 2010, the chicken population in the
Philippines was estimated 159 million, slightly higher (0.2 percent) than last
year’s level. Layer and native chicken inventory grew by 13 and 2 percent, respectively.
Almost 50 percent of the total chicken population was accounted for native or
village chicken raised in backyard farms while the remaining 32.8% (broilers)
and 18% (layers) were taken up by commercial broilers.

Despite the level of sophistication it
has achieved, the local industry is still faced with problems that deter its
further development. The Philippine broiler industry is now faced with the
challenge of beefing up production through importation of chicken meat and
chicken meat cuts. Although some broiler integrators are exporting increasing
volumes of broiler meat, a significant quantity of cut-up broiler meat is also
being imported into the country. The continuing importation of leg quarters at
dumped prices poses a major problem to local broiler production. The
unreasonably low-priced imported leg quarters are causing significant price
distortion of broiler meat in the country that is seriously hurting local
producers. There is also a wide disparity between farmgate and retail prices of
broiler that causes problems particularly to local individual broiler

Section 2 –

for Qualitative / Quantitative Research

research study used mixed research design which is a combination of qualitative
and quantitative research. The researchers decided to used qualitative research
because in this proposed project we will going to interview our participants.
Interviewing is one of the most common methods for collecting data in
qualitative research. Though it is time consuming ,we believe that those
participants we have conducted our interview with can provide us an in depth
contextual descriptions that is related to our study , because by just
interviewing it will allow the respondents to choose their own words that will
help us to develop a real sense of a person’s understanding of a situation. We
are also going to use quantitative research as it is more reliable because of
the use of statistical data. We would apply this by gathering all the
information through surveys then after completing all the information we’ll
going to generalize it all to come up in one answer.

B. Methodology

order to see the comparative analysis in consumption rate in of buying chicken
products between holiday season and non-holiday season in Banaba, San Mateo , a
mixed research design was used. Specifically, descriptive and random sample
techniques. As a descriptive study, it determined the information about the
consumption rate in buying chicken products between holiday season andnon-holiday

consume chicken during holiday and non-holiday seasons that they can accurately
fill up those survey Questionnaire’s.
